A tally chart is a quick way to count while you observe. Draw one line for each thing; the fifth line goes across the other four to make a gate of five, which is easy to count. When you finish, write the total for each group.
A bar chart shows the totals. Each bar should be the same width with a gap between bars, and the numbers go up the side in equal steps. Give your chart a title and label each bar, so others know what it shows. Then use it to answer questions about your data.
Worked example
A tally shows |||| ||| for 'sunny days'. How many sunny days were there?
- The crossed group of lines is 5.
- The extra lines are 3.
Answer:5 + 3 = 8 sunny days.
