Staying healthy

Learn what the body needs to stay healthy: food, water, exercise, sleep and hygiene.

Humans need food, water and air to stay alive. To stay healthy we also need exercise, sleep and to keep clean. A balanced diet has the right amounts of different foods: fruit and vegetables, foods like bread and rice for energy, foods like beans, eggs and fish for growing, and a little fat. Too many sweets and fizzy drinks harm teeth.

Exercise makes your heart and muscles strong. Sleep lets your body rest and grow. Washing your hands with soap gets rid of germs that can make you ill, especially before eating and after using the toilet.

Worked example

Why should you wash your hands before eating?

  1. Hands pick up germs from things we touch.
  2. Germs can get into the body with food.

Answer:Soap and water remove them, so we are less likely to get ill.
