Grade 2 Maths · Unit 4: Time and money

Telling the time to five minutes

Read times like 3:20 and 8:55 on a clock.

Each number on a clock stands for 5 minutes when you read the minute hand. Count in 5s from the 12: the 1 is 5 minutes, the 2 is 10 minutes, the 4 is 20 minutes, and so on.

Read the hour from the short hand, then count the minutes. If the short hand is between 2 and 3 and the long hand points to 7, the time is 2:35.

Worked example

  1. The hour is 8.
  2. Count in 5s to the 4: 5, 10, 15, 20.
