When a whole is split into equal parts, each part has a name. Two equal parts are halves. Three equal parts are thirds. Four equal parts are quarters, also called fourths.
The parts must be the same size. Two halves make a whole, three thirds make a whole and four quarters make a whole. The more equal parts there are, the smaller each part is.
