Bar graphs

Read a bar graph and answer questions about it.

A bar graph shows data, which is information we have collected, such as the fruit children like best. Each bar stands for one choice, and its height shows how many.

Read the number at the top of each bar using the scale on the side. You can find the most and least popular, how many more chose one thing than another, and the total number asked by adding all the bars.

Worked example

The bars show apples 9, bananas 5, grapes 7 and pears 3. How many children were asked altogether?

  1. Add all the bars: 9 + 5 + 7 + 3.
  2. 9 + 5 = 14, 14 + 7 = 21, 21 + 3 = 24.
