Grade 2 Maths · Unit 3: Adding and subtracting to 1000

Column addition

Add three-digit numbers in columns, carrying when needed.

Write the numbers one above the other so the ones, tens and hundreds line up. Start adding with the ones column on the right.

If a column adds up to 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry the ten to the next column. For 368 + 254: 8 + 4 = 12, write 2 and carry 1. Then 6 + 5 + 1 = 12, write 2 and carry 1. Then 3 + 2 + 1 = 6. The answer is 622.

Worked example

Work out 475 + 318

  1. Ones: 5 + 8 = 13. Write 3, carry 1.
  2. Tens: 7 + 1 + 1 = 9. Hundreds: 4 + 3 = 7.
