Commas in Lists

Use commas to separate items in a list.

When you write a list in a sentence, put a comma between the items. Before the last item, use and instead of a comma.

For example: “I packed a hat, a towel, sun cream and a book.” The commas help the reader see where one item ends and the next begins.

You can list adjectives too: “It was a long, hot, dusty road.”

Worked example

Add commas: “We saw lions zebras giraffes and elephants.”

  1. Find the items: lions, zebras, giraffes, elephants.
  2. Put commas between them, but use and before the last one.

Answer:We saw lions, zebras, giraffes and elephants.
