Grade 12 English · Unit 5: Critical Essays

Evidence, Analysis and Evaluation

Move from analysis to evaluation and alternative interpretations.

Evaluation judges how effectively a writer achieves their purpose and considers alternative readings. For example: “Some critics see Antony as sincere. Arguably, though, his speech is carefully calculated to manipulate the crowd.”

Support evaluation with precise evidence and close analysis: “The cold, formal verb ‘dispensed’ suggests Jane is treated as a problem to be managed rather than a child to be loved.”

The best essays show a personal, thoughtful response grounded in the text: confident, tentative where appropriate, and always justified.
