Concise and Precise Prose

Cut padding and combine ideas into precise sentences.

Concise writing says more with fewer words. Remove padding such as “due to the fact that” (because), “in terms of” and “it is important to note that”.

Combine short, choppy sentences: “The author uses imagery. It is vivid. It shows decay” becomes “The author's vivid imagery reveals decay.”

Avoid vague pronouns: “this” should be followed by a noun (this closure, this argument). Precision makes your ideas easier to follow and more convincing.

Worked example

Make concise: “The report was late due to the fact that it was not on time.”

  1. Late and not on time say the same thing.
  2. Remove the repetition.

Answer:The report was late.
