Grade 1 Science · Unit 3: Light, sound and the sky

Light and dark

Learn that we need light to see, and tell light sources from things that reflect light.

We need light to see. Light comes from light sources, such as the Sun, a torch, a candle flame and a lamp. In a room with no light at all, it is completely dark and we cannot see anything, even our own hand.

Some things look bright but do not make their own light. The Moon, a mirror and a shiny spoon reflect light from a source. That means light bounces off them. Some materials let light through, some let a little through, and some block it. Light from the Sun is very strong, so we wear sunglasses and a hat and we never look straight at it.

Worked example

  1. A light source makes its own light.
