Grade 1 English · Unit 5: Word Meanings and Order

Writing in Order

Use first, next, then and last to put events in order.

When you write about something that happened, or how to do something, put it in order. Time words help your reader follow along: first, next, then, after that and last.

Before you write, say the events aloud in order. Then write one sentence for each part. Start each part with a time word.

Your reader will understand you better.

Worked example

Put in order: “Then I ate my toast.” “First I made toast.” “Last I washed my plate.”

  1. Find First: “First I made toast.”
  2. Then comes next: “Then I ate my toast.”
  3. Last is at the end.

Answer:First I made toast. Then I ate my toast. Last I washed my plate.
