Zayan did not want to go to the doctor. “What if it hurts?” he asked Dad on the bus in Birmingham. He held his old teddy, Captain Fluff, very tightly.
At the clinic, Dr Amina smiled and shook Captain Fluff’s paw. “Hello, Captain,” she said. “Would you like to go first?” Zayan nodded.
Dr Amina put her stethoscope on Captain Fluff’s tummy. “I am listening to his heart,” she explained. “Thump-thump. Very strong!” She looked in his ears with a tiny torch and measured him on the height chart. “Captain Fluff is a very healthy bear.”
“Now it’s your turn,” said Dr Amina. “Would you like to listen too?” She let Zayan put the stethoscope in his own ears and listen to his heart. Thump-thump! It was loud and quick, like a little drum.
Zayan breathed out slowly. The check-up did not hurt at all. At the end, Dr Amina gave him a shiny sticker, and one for Captain Fluff too.
On the bus home, Zayan said, “Dad, when I grow up, I might be a doctor.” Captain Fluff, with his sticker on his chest, seemed to agree.
