Tobi had a check-up at the clinic. He sat next to Dad’s wheelchair and held his hand tight. His tummy felt fizzy. “Will it hurt?” he asked.
Dr Okafor smiled. She had a stethoscope around her neck. “Today I will just look and listen,” she said. She looked in Tobi’s ears and in his mouth. “Say aaah!” Tobi said “Aaah!” as loudly as a lion.
Then she warmed the stethoscope in her hands and put it on Tobi’s chest. “What a strong heart!” she said. “Do you want to hear it too?”
Tobi put the earpieces carefully in his ears. Ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum! His heart sounded like a tiny drum. Tobi’s eyes went wide. Then he listened to Dad’s heart. Ba-dum… ba-dum… It was slower and deeper.
On the way home, Tobi tapped a rhythm on Dad’s wheelchair. “Ba-dum, ba-dum,” he sang. “My heart is a drummer!” His tummy was not fizzy any more.
