Elif and her grandfather got up while it was still dark. They tiptoed out of their cave hotel in Cappadocia, Turkey, and climbed to the top of a small hill. “Why are we up so early, Dede?” Elif yawned.
“Wait and see,” said Dede, wrapping her in his warm jacket.
Slowly the sky turned from grey to pink. Then Elif heard a loud WHOOSH! Behind the rocks, a huge balloon was filling with hot air. Another whoosh, and another! One by one, giant balloons rose into the sky: red ones, yellow ones and one with rainbow stripes.
“How do they fly?” asked Elif. “A burner heats the air inside,” said Dede. “Hot air is lighter than cold air, so it rises and lifts the balloon, like a bubble rising in water.”
Elif counted forty balloons floating over the tall, rocky towers. One drifted so low that the people in its basket waved to her. Elif waved back with both arms.
As the sun came up, the balloons glowed like lanterns. “Dede,” said Elif, “this is even better than sleeping in.”
